Minneapolis Aquatennial 2026: Torchlight Parade, Free Downtown Events, and Where to Stay (July 18–26)

After a year of real uncertainty about its future, the Minneapolis Aquatennial — the city’s official civic celebration since 1940 — is back for its 87th year. The 2026 Aquatennial runs Saturday, July 18 through Sunday, July 26, now produced by the Aquatennial Ambassador Organization, with a full week of free, family-friendly events across downtown, the riverfront, and the city’s lakes. If you’ve been looking for the right week to visit Minneapolis, this is it — and if you stay with us at Oaklands on 9th, the festival’s signature event passes one block from the front door.

The Torchlight Parade rolls right past 9th Street (Wednesday, July 22)

The Aquatennial Torchlight Parade — the largest nighttime parade in Minnesota — steps off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, running down Nicollet Mall from 12th Street to 4th Street. Oaklands on 9th sits at 215 South 9th Street, one short block from where the parade crosses 9th and Nicollet. That means no parking hunt and no shuttle: walk out the door, find a curb spot, watch the floats and lights go by, and stroll home in five minutes. Guests coming in just for the evening can also ride in on the Metro Transit light rail or bus lines that converge downtown.

A week of free events within walking distance

Nearly everything on the 2026 calendar is free, and a surprising amount of it happens within a 20-minute walk of our door. Some highlights, per the full schedule in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine:

  • Saturday, July 18: the Model Sailboat Pond turns the Government Plaza fountains into a fleet of 20-plus model boats, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 21: the Summer Snowball Classic brings real snowballs to The Commons park near U.S. Bank Stadium at 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 22: after the parade, Movies in the Park screens at The Commons around sunset (about 8:45 p.m.).
  • Friday, July 24: Aquatennial Night at Target Field — Twins baseball at 7:10 p.m., the return of the collectible Skipper Pin (the first since 2019), and postgame fireworks. Note: the big riverfront fireworks show isn’t on this year’s calendar, so this is the fireworks fix.
  • Saturday, July 25: the riverfront takes over, with Twin Cities Carifest and the Mississippi Mile car show along West River Road and the Boom Island Big Bounce running all weekend.
  • Saturday–Sunday, July 25–26: the Loring Park Art Festival fills the park with artist booths, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday.

That last one comes with a neighborly tip: the art festival wraps around the pond at Loring Park, and just across the park stands 300 Clifton, our sister property — a historic mansion bed & breakfast, if you’re traveling with friends who’d rather do their weekend in Gilded Age style. And if you want the full story of the city between events, Minneapolis Trolley Tours runs vintage trolley sightseeing tours all summer. The Aquatennial has been a Minneapolis institution long enough to have its own Minnesota Historical Society research guide — 87 years of Queens of the Lakes, milk-carton boats, and parades.

Why an apartment-style stay beats a hotel room for festival week

A bright, fully furnished studio apartment with a full kitchen at Oaklands on 9th, a walkable home base for Aquatennial week

Aquatennial week is a lot of time outdoors, and it’s better with a home base. Our furnished studios in a restored 1889 brownstone come with full kitchens (breakfast before the parade, cold drinks after), free laundry, and WiFi and utilities included — with no contracts, whether you stay two nights or the whole nine-day festival. We’ve put together a walkable summer guide to downtown if you want to fill the gaps between events. And if you’re tempted to stretch the trip into August, WWE SummerSlam lands at U.S. Bank Stadium August 1–2 — the summer downtown just keeps going.

Book your Aquatennial home base

Downtown rooms fill up fast for parade week, and the festival is close enough now that it’s worth locking in your dates. Check availability and book your studio at Oaklands on 9th, or call us at (612) 314-5124 — we’re happy to point you to the best curb on Nicollet for the parade.
