A two-night hotel stay never raises the question. A two-month stay does. Somewhere around week three of an extended stay, most guests need something ordinary and medical — a refill, a filling, a cough that will not shift — and they discover they have no idea where to go. Here is the short, practical version for anyone staying in downtown Minneapolis.
This is a general orientation to what is nearby, not medical advice. Always confirm hours, insurance and availability with the provider before you go.
The short answer: walk east on 8th Street
Downtown Minneapolis has an unusual advantage — a full public hospital system sitting right inside it rather than out on a ring road. Hennepin Healthcare, still widely called HCMC, runs a downtown campus clustered along South 8th Street. From Oakland’s on 9th at 215 South 9th Street, that is a walk rather than a ride.

Primary care and clinics
The main downtown outpatient building is Hennepin Healthcare’s Clinic & Specialty Center at 715 South 8th Street, Minneapolis 55404. Appointments go through 612-873-6963. It is the single most useful address to have written down if you are living downtown for a while, because primary care, specialty clinics and a pharmacy are all in the same building.
Hennepin Healthcare also runs a North Loop Clinic at the other end of downtown, plus neighbourhood clinics further out in Whittier, East Lake, Golden Valley, St. Anthony Village and Brooklyn Park. Their locations page lists current addresses and hours for all of them, and their primary care service page explains how to get established as a new patient.
The other large system in the neighbourhood is M Health Fairview, whose location finder lets you filter by urgent care, walk-in clinic, pharmacy or lab and show only what is open right now — the most useful single tool on this list. They also run same-day virtual urgent care appointments through their patient app, which is often the fastest option when you are new in town and not yet registered anywhere.
A pharmacy you can walk to
The Clinic & Specialty Center Pharmacy is on Level 1 of the same 715 South 8th Street building, reachable on 612-873-6600. As listed at the time of writing it opens Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Sundays — but pharmacy hours change, so check the pharmacy page before you make the trip.
If you take a regular medication, do the transfer early rather than on the day you run out. Call the new pharmacy, give them the name and phone number of your pharmacy back home, and let them pull the prescription across. It usually takes a day or two, and it is the single thing extended-stay guests leave too late.
Dental
Dental is the gap most people do not plan for, because a cracked tooth does not wait for you to get home. Hennepin Healthcare runs a dental and oral surgery service as part of the downtown campus, which covers general dentistry as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery. For routine cleanings, most downtown practices will take a short-term patient — worth booking in your first week rather than your last.

Urgent care versus the emergency department
The distinction matters more here than the names suggest, because it is the difference between an hour and a very expensive afternoon.
- Urgent care or a walk-in clinic — sprains, infections, stitches, a fever that will not break, anything you would normally take to a GP but cannot wait a week for. Filter for it on the M Health Fairview locations page.
- An emergency department — chest pain, difficulty breathing, serious injury, stroke symptoms. Hennepin Healthcare’s downtown campus has one, and M Health Fairview runs emergency departments at the University of Minnesota Medical Center’s West Bank site at 2312 South 6th Street and its East Bank site at 500 Harvard Street SE, both a short trip across the river.
- Call 911 for anything life-threatening. Do not drive yourself.
Three things that catch extended-stay guests out
Insurance networks. If you are here on a work assignment or an insurance placement, check whether your plan treats Minnesota providers as in-network before you book anything non-urgent. A phone call to the number on your card takes ten minutes and can save a four-figure bill.
An address for the forms. Every clinic will ask for a local address. Having a real, stable one — a studio you have booked for a month or three — makes registration straightforward in a way that a hotel room number does not.
Patient portals. Both systems run MyChart. Set it up on day one; it is how you get results, message a nurse and book follow-ups without another phone queue.
Why staying here makes this easier
Oakland’s on 9th is a restored 1889 brownstone at 215 South 9th Street, in the middle of all of the above. The building is a block from the skyway system — you walk that block, it is not skyway-connected — which matters in February when you have an appointment and it is fifteen below. If the skyway is new to you, we wrote how the Minneapolis skyway works.
A lot of our guests are here for medical reasons in the first place. If you are a patient or a family member, see where to stay near HCMC. If you are on a clinical assignment, see furnished housing for travel nurses. And if you just want to know what comes with the studio, here is what’s included.
Stay a night, a week, or a month
Our studios are fully furnished with full kitchens, and WiFi, all utilities, heat and laundry are included. No contracts — book a night, a week or a month. Some units are pet friendly. Have a look at availability at our booking page, or call us on (612) 314-5124 and we will talk you through it.
