Hennepin Avenue’s historic theater row is one of the best reasons to spend a night — or a week — in downtown Minneapolis, and August 2026 might be its busiest month of the summer. Three beautifully restored theaters — the Orpheum, State, and Pantages — sit within a few blocks of each other on Hennepin Avenue, and all three are an easy walk (about ten minutes) from our front door at 215 South 9th Street. Here’s what’s on the marquees next month, verified on the official Hennepin Arts calendar, with enough lead time for you to grab tickets and book a place to sleep.
Comedy takes over: BOSCO and Josh Johnson’s Comedy Band Camp
On Wednesday, August 12 at 8 PM, the Pantages hosts The Marvelous Miss Gender starring BOSCO — the RuPaul’s Drag Race and All Stars 10 favorite on her first-ever solo tour. It’s an 18+ show with a pre-show meet-and-greet option if you want the full experience.
Then Josh Johnson’s Comedy Band Camp settles into the Orpheum for a five-show weekend: Friday, August 14 at 7 PM; Saturday, August 15 at 5 and 8:30 PM; and Sunday, August 16 at 5 and 8:30 PM. The Daily Show’s rotating host mixes stand-up with live music, and demand has been strong everywhere — there’s a six-ticket limit per buyer.
Concert nights: Alicia Villarreal, Mat Kearney, and Yolanda del Río
Ranchera fans get two big nights at the Pantages. Alicia Villarreal brings her Donde Todo Comenzó 2.0 tour on Saturday, August 8 at 8 PM (rescheduled from February — original tickets are honored), and legendary Yolanda del Río, La Gran Señora de México, celebrates a 50-year career on Saturday, August 22 at 8 PM.
In between, singer-songwriter Mat Kearney plays the State Theatre on Friday, August 14 at 8 PM with special guest Jake Scott — the Nothing Left to Lose, Everything to Gain Tour, presented by First Avenue. Ray LaMontagne closes the month at the Orpheum (August 30)
On Sunday, August 30 at 7 PM, Ray LaMontagne’s Trouble 20th Anniversary Tour arrives at the Orpheum with special guest The Weather Station — he’s playing his debut album Trouble front to back, plus songs from across nine records. The date was rescheduled from 2025, so previously issued tickets are honored. It also lands on the first full weekend of the Minnesota State Fair, so you can easily make a fair-by-day, concert-by-night weekend of it.
Book early for the August 14–16 weekend
A friendly heads-up: the middle weekend of August is the busiest of the summer downtown. Josh Johnson’s five Orpheum shows and Mat Kearney at the State share the calendar with Ed Sheeran at U.S. Bank Stadium on August 15 and Twins baseball at Target Field.
