A quick peek at the grand staircase as it is starting to come together. In 1929, the staircase got its first paint job, a faux wood grain to turn the dark stained wood light. The faux painters didn’t want to hassle with all the spindles so they removed them and installed paneling under the handrails. All of the rest of the woodwork, like the wainscot, we were able to save even though it was underwater for years. The stairs were all reinforced, rebuilt, resurfaced and now will have a carpet runner up the middle. We put a mirror on the first landing that came from the dressing room at the old Macy’s. We also put a newel post lamp back at the bottom of the stairs where there used to be a gas one.
